The United States Public Health Service (USPHS) recently recognized West Virginia University School of Pharmacy student Meagan Casimir for her commitment to reducing unintended pregnancies and promoting public health.

For the past two years, Casimir, a third-year student pharmacist, has organized and hosted an interprofessional educational event at the School of Pharmacy focusing on contraceptive care. The 90-minute sessions brought together learners and professionals from various healthcare disciplines and featured educational content on the general principles of contraceptive use, prescribing practices, relevant statistics, and legal considerations. The events also included a discussion on the scope of prescribing and counseling related to contraceptives.

For her work, Casimir received the USPHS Excellence in Public Health Pharmacy Award, a national honor presented to pharmacy students who make significant contributions to public health. This year, the USPHS recognized only 89 pharmacy students from across the country with this prestigious award.

Established to highlight the role of pharmacy in advancing public health, the USPHS Excellence in Public Health Pharmacy Award supports initiatives that align with Healthy People 2030, the Surgeon General’s priorities, and the evolving responsibilities of the pharmacy profession.
