Michaela is from Wellsburg, West Virginia. She will be graduating with an Area of Emphasis in College Teaching in Pharmacy.

Why did you pursue a career in pharmacy?

I wanted a profession in which I could make an impact on others and be flexible in the roles I could hold. After researching careers, I discovered pharmacy and thought it would be a good fit.

Why did you choose West Virginia University for Pharmacy School?

I discovered that WVU had a direct admit pathway program, and I wanted to stay close to home. Those factors played a significant role in my decision to choose WVU. After a tour of the School of Pharmacy on Decide WVU Day, I knew this was where I would complete my undergraduate studies and eventual PharmD.

How has your experience at the WVU School of Pharmacy prepared you for your future career?

After graduation, I will be starting a managed care residency. Through school, I was exposed to this area of pharmacy and had the opportunity to complete an APPE rotation in managed care. Without these experiences, my path after graduation would look quite different.

What is your favorite memory from the WVU School of Pharmacy?

My favorite memory from my time at the WVU School of Pharmacy is the advocacy trips to Washington, DC. I was able to go twice, and each time, I came back with a renewed sense of purpose and understanding of the importance of advocacy in pharmacy.

Is there a professor/staff member at the School of Pharmacy who has significantly influenced your journey?

Dr. Betsy Elswick influenced my journey. Taking her Advocacy and Leadership Elective showed me a different side of pharmacy, and going to Washington, DC, helped show the importance of advocating for our profession.

What will you miss the most about the School of Pharmacy?

The thing I will miss the most is the professors that helped me along my journey.

What advice do you have for incoming P1 students?

My best advice is to get involved. Join at least one club and attend its conference. Your connections will last a lifetime, and you never know where you might end up.

What is a fun or surprising fact about you that most people might not know?

A fun fact about me is that I have been to 19 National Parks. It's my goal to visit all 63!
