Additional Benefits of the Program
Staffing
The resident’s staffing commitment is a 20% teaching allocation within the WVU School of Pharmacy. All staffing falls during normal class times. The resident is not required to staff any weekends, evenings, or major holidays.
Teaching Certificate
The resident has the option to earn a Teaching Certificate in addition to completing the required academic experiences. This is particularly encouraged if a Teaching Certificate has not been earned during the PGY1 year. Additional details are available at: Teaching Certificate Program | School of Pharmacy.
Robust Academic Experiences
The PGY2 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency at WVU School of Pharmacy offers a unique experience for residents to be embedded within a School of Pharmacy where they gain valuable experiences in faculty roles, including teaching in small and large group settings, precepting, writing exam questions, developing OSCEs, and serving on School Committees. Complementing the academic responsibilities, direct patient care sites are within a large academic medical center with ample opportunities for interprofessional collaboration and include precepting of IPPEs, APPEs, and a PGY1 Community Resident. Service is not limited to practice, residents are supported in their efforts to increase involvement with local, state, and national organizations.
Advanced Clinical Practice
West Virginia has progressive pharmacy laws which allow for independent prescribing of contraceptives and smoking cessation agents in addition to extensive collaborative practice agreements. Pharmacists have provider status in WV.
Longitudinal Rotations
The majority of clinical experiences in this residency are longitudinal allowing for development of the pharmacist - patient relationship and interprofessional team building.
Leadership Selectives
In the second half of the residency year, the resident chooses one of three leadership selectives to allow them to develop their desired skills in the academic, patient centered medical home, or community setting.
Large Cohort
Though there is only one spot in this program, the combined programs of WVU School of Pharmacy and WVU Medicine train almost 30 residents each year. The resident can work with this large group in multiple ways including through a recurring wellness series.
Additional training opportunities
WVU offers a yearly Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist (CTTS) training program open to our resident; previous residents have successfully completed the certification and even received a scholarship to cover the cost after a brief application.
