Dr. Lori Hazlehurst, a professor at the West Virginia University School of Pharmacy and associate director of basic research at the WVU Cancer Institute, is now a standing member of the Mechanisms of Cancer Therapeutics-2 study section for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Center for Scientific Review (CSR).

According to the NIH website, only the most accomplished, broad-thinking and creative scientists and experts serve as peer reviewers for NIH grants. Qualified individuals must also possess a high level of expertise in their field. NIH peer reviewers are volunteers, but they must pass a rigorous application process to be chosen for the honor.

Peer review is the cornerstone of the NIH grants process, helping ensure that NIH grant applications are evaluated in a way that is fair, equitable, timely, and free of bias.

Hazlehurst will begin her membership with NIH on July 1.
