WVU School of Nursing students will support a free community health fair at the Rostraver Public Library, located in Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania, on April 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Health fair attendees are invited to receive free vital sign readings, education on chronic diseases, as well as an assessment and record of current medications.
Depending on their progression in the nursing program, students will be organized into stations at the health fair to best serve the attendees.
“The plan of hosting a health fair at the Rostraver Public Library was something that I have been wanting to do to serve my community,” said Dr. Christy Barnhart, a clinical associate professor and Student Nurses’ Association faculty advisor.
“Providing these community health fairs is so important, as this provides members of the community with a place to receive a glimpse of their health status and an opportunity to receive information that helps them to comply with a preventative plan of care,” Barnhart said. “This also provides them with information that they can have for provider visits that would offer an overall picture of the patient's health.”
The event also provides a hands-on opportunity for students to practice their skills and share their nursing knowledge. Students who are interested in volunteering are asked to contact Dr. Barnhart at christy.barnhart1@hsc.wvu.edu.
