The newest members of the West Virginia University School of Dentistry Alpha Xi Chapter of Sigma Phi Alpha were inducted during a virtual ceremony April 27.
Alumni membership in the national dental hygiene honor society was granted to the top scholars in the Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene Class of 2025 – Sofia Henline and Rebecca Good. Inducted by chapter president Emma Clendenin (’22), the students were presented with a certificate, honor cords and a stole to be worn during Commencement and the official key of the organization symbolizing their selection into the honor society.
Candidates for membership must be in the final academic term of a dental hygiene program, rank at the top of their class in scholarship, service and leadership, and exhibit qualities for potential future growth and accomplishment. Membership is limited to 10% of each graduating class per program and is to be selected from the top 20% of the class.
The honor society was founded for the purpose of promoting, recognizing and honoring scholarship, service and character among dental hygiene students.
Sigma Phi Alpha adopted its constitution and by-laws in 1958 during a meeting of the Dental Hygiene Education Section of the American Dental Education Association. The organization’s insignia – ΣΦΑ – symbolizes wisdom/scholarship, philanthropy/service to others and virtue/character.
The Alpha Xi Chapter of Sigma Phi Alpha was established at the WVU School of Dentistry in 1967.
