Tim Nurkiewicz, professor in the West Virginia University School of Medicine Department of Physiology, Pharmacology and Toxicology, has received notification of continued funding for the research project “Pre-doctoral Training in Systems Toxicology.”

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, a part of the National Institutes of Health, awarded $280,105 for the 2026 fiscal year, which represents year five of the five-year grant totaling $1,246,320.

The grant supports the Predoctoral Training in Systems Toxicology Program open to doctoral students in biomedical sciences, clinical and translational sciences, and engineering. The program focuses on inhalation toxicology research and prepares students with the skills, knowledge, and acumen needed for a successful career in the various fields of toxicology. It will create a new generation of young scholars who can directly address the need for innovative toxicology research for the citizens of West Virginia, Appalachia, and the nation.
