The Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will offer Introduction to Peer Advocacy (SRVL 300, CRN: 15979) for the spring 2024 semester.
The purpose of the course is to provide students with introductory knowledge in the approach to responding to, advocating for people harmed and preventing identity-based discrimination and harassment which includes sexual misconduct and assault and other forms of power-based personal violence.
Students will work with the WVU Peer Advocate program by completing service hours that include shadowing existing advocates, prevention educators and supporting program logistics and assisting with events. Students will also leave the course with a credential as a Certified Peer Educator through NASPA, which will provide translatable skills in program development, leadership, facilitation, prevention and supporting social and behavioral change.
While the course focuses on advocacy around power-based personal violence such as discrimination, intimate partner violence and sexual violence, these skills and experiences are useful for anyone whose career goals or personal interests might include advocacy around any topic.
