Providers will earn continuing education credit
The West Virginia University School of Dentistry is accepting participants for an upcoming Certified Tobacco Treatment Training Program continuing education program.
The three-day course is Wednesday, May 15 – Friday, May 17, 2019 at the Health Sciences Center.
Interprofessional education program is designed for pharmacists, physicians, physician assistants, dentists, dental hygienists, nurses, nurse practitioners, respiratory therapists, licensed practicing counselors, addiction counselors and other health care providers who encounter patients who are tobacco users.
More than 15 healthcare professionals will present to participants who are interested in becoming certified tobacco treatment specialists.
Throughout the program, lectures, role-playing and case presentations will be utilized to discuss pharmacological and counseling interventions with patients interested in tobacco cessation.
According to Susan Morgan, DDS, clinical professor and lead of the tobacco treatment training program at the WVU School of Dentistry, inconsistent and contradicting treatment plans from each of a patient’s healthcare providers presents challenges.
“It’s disheartening when various providers for the same patient are not in agreement with use of evidence-based recommendations for tobacco cessation treatment. This program has the potential to improve cessation rates and improve the quality of life for our number one concern, our patients,” Morgan said.
The continuing education program will cover 11 course objectives.
Participants can earn between seven and 24 continuing education credit hours.
