Pharmaceutical Care Labs

Residents will be required to complete a minimum of one lab each semester.  The resident should attempt to not teach more than one lab during a given rotation.

Patient Education

Training in patient education skills will be satisfied through:

  1. Direct involvement in patient discharge counseling regarding home medication regimens that takes place during selected clinical rotations within the hospital.
  2. Patient counseling in the ambulatory clinic (when applicable) will involve hands-on experience, discussing with patients about their disease state, drug therapy, and the monitoring and adjusting of their drug therapy regimens.

Classroom Experience

All Residents will be required to teach at least 1-2 hours in the classroom setting. Each class will be part of the Pharm.D. curriculum at the WVU School of Pharmacy. Potential classes that can be taught by Residents will be provided at the beginning of the Residency year, and will be assigned prior to the start of the Fall semester. Residents will be expected to design and deliver an appropriate presentation based on the audience and intent of the class. They are also required to receive feedback on their presentation from the students and or facilitator. Their role may also include the development of student assessment tools including quizzes, exams, or other appropriate assessments.

Continuing Education Presentations

The goal of the Continuing Education presentations is to enhance the participant’s knowledge regarding the use of drug therapy to treat and prevent disease.  Participants will learn to evaluate the scientific literature and discuss its applicability to clinical practice.  Participants will learn to present complex concepts and scientific data in a clear and concise manner. The audience will consist of pharmacy residents, faculty, pharmacy practitioners, pharmacy students, pharmacy technicians, and invited guests.  Presentations will be formal in nature and audience members will refrain from asking questions during the presentation (except to ask brief points of clarification).

Residents will be required to complete at least one CE presentation. Each presentation must be 1 hour in duration and the presenter must use audiovisual aids (i.e. slides, video) during the presentation.  All members of the audience will evaluate each presentation using a standardized assessment instrument.  Residents are encouraged to work with content experts/mentors for each presentation.

All programs will be offered for Continuing Education (CE) credit.  An ACPE Program Description Form must be completed and submitted to the Office of Continuing Education at the WVU School of Pharmacy at least 45 days prior to the presentation.  The contact person at the Office of Continuing Education and the details regarding the CE submission requirements can be found on the department website.

IPPE Program

P-1 Students – Introduction to Clinical Pharmacy

This experience consists of one site visit to Ruby Memorial Hospital by each of the P-1 students from the WVU School of Pharmacy, with a Pharmacy Resident as the facilitator. During the visit, the students will observe/participate in pre-rounding preparation and then attend interdisciplinary rounds along with the Resident. The students are only required to observe and ask questions as necessary, as the purpose is simply for them to observe and understand the role of a clinical pharmacist as part of the interdisciplinary team. These visits are scheduled throughout the entire academic year, and only take place with Residents that are currently scheduled for a learning experience that includes interdisciplinary rounds.
