BIOSKETCH
S. Suresh Madhavan, MBA, PhD, is a Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Pharmaceutical Systems and Policy at West Virginia University (WVU). Dr. Madhavan’s primary areas of research interests include health services research and health policy, with particular emphasis on improving access to and quality of health and preventive care services, and the cost-effective use of drugs in healthcare systems. Dr. Madhavan’s research has focused on cost-effectiveness and budgetary impact of preventive drug therapies in public programs like Medicaid and the state government employees’ insurance program. Over the years, he and his graduate students have studied chronic conditions such as osteoporosis, multiple sclerosis, breast cancer, cardiovascular disease, insomnia, depression, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and autism looking at issues such as quality of life, medication prescribing, cost-effectiveness of therapy, economic burden of care, and other such issues related to access, cost, affordability, and quality of health care.
Dr. Madhavan has also been involved in developing, implementing, and evaluating innovative roles for pharmacists in the health care system. Of particular note is the Centers for Diseases Control funded study with the American Pharmacists Association regarding the pharmacist’s role in immunizations and a study of the pharmacist’s role as an academic detailer, which received the Council of State Governments’ National Award for Innovation. Dr. Madhavan currently is the principal investigator of multi-year grant award (R24) from the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality (AHRQ) to establish the West Virginia Collaborative Health Outcomes Research for Therapies and Services (WV CoHORTS) Center
Dr. Madhavan has been involved in numerous grants and contracts exceeding $20 million from federal and state agencies, and private corporations. He has over 100 research publications and abstracts in a variety of journals including Social Science and Medicine, Public Health, Journal of Health and Social Policy, Journal of Community Health, International Journal of Obesity, Journal of Healthcare for the Poor and Underserved, and Marketing Health Services. Dr. Madhavan has made over 110 presentations at various national conferences and as an invited speaker. He has been a mentor and PhD committee chair to twelve PhD graduates trained in health outcomes research and one in public health who have found employment in academia, the pharmaceutical industry, and clinical research organizations. Dr. Madhavan and his graduate students have been the recipients of three best student paper awards at the annual meetings of the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR).
Dr. Madhavan has been a research grant reviewer for the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Cancer Institute, and has been active in several national organizations in and outside of pharmacy. He was recently invited to join the Health Care Quality and Effectiveness Research study section of AHRQ for a four year term. He has served or is currently serving on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association, Journal of Research in Social and Administrative Pharmacy, and Journal of Pharmacy Teaching. Dr. Madhavan has served on several immunization advisory boards; two gubernatorial task forces on prescription drug benefits, and also provide pharmaceutical policy support to West Virginia agencies and provider groups. Dr. Madhavan is a Fellow of the American Pharmacists Association - Academy of Pharmaceutical Research and Sciences, and is a 2005-06 American Association Colleges of Pharmacy Leadership Fellow. He served as the Chair-elect and Chair of the Economic, Social, and Administrative Sciences section of the American Pharmacists Association from 2006-08. Dr. Madhavan received the WVU School of Pharmacy Board of Advisors’ Excellence in Research Award in 2009 and was inducted into the WVU Health Sciences Center Academy of Excellence in Teaching & Learning in 2010.
