WVU’s Health Services and Outcomes Research PhD graduates tackle the big questions in healthcare. They analyze problems and seek solutions related to healthcare access, safety, utilization, cost, quality and policy in real-world settings — keeping patient outcomes paramount. We are committed to eliminating health disparities through our research, education and service activities.

Students are trained in different types of research methods, including survey research, intervention research, epidemiology and economic evaluations. Students also gain expertise in the use of large federal and state databases for health services, policy and outcomes research along with the latest in data analytic software.

  • Environment: WVU’s comprehensive academic health sciences center gives our students the opportunity to collaborate on research with faculty in five schools: Pharmacy, Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing and Public Health and health professionals in a 690-bed, tertiary-care teaching hospital.
  • Affordability: WVU provides health services and outcomes research PhD students with highly competitive financial support, including a stipend of $30,000 per year plus full tuition and fee waivers.
  • Community: Few other schools with a health services and outcomes research degree program have more focused and sustained interactions between students and faculty. Additionally, you can live and work in Morgantown, West Virginia, ranked among the best small cities in the U.S. for its cultural activities, outdoor recreation and other community assets.
