MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – As the WVU Cancer Institute grows physically through renovations and expansion, it also continues to recruit acclaimed physicians to provide quality care to patients.
“These six new WVU Cancer Institute faculty members are specialists with a diversity of skills who bring expertise mastered at academic centers across the U.S. to West Virginia,” Richard Goldberg, M.D., director of the WVU Cancer Institute, said. “Their mission and the mission of the WVU Cancer Institute is to elevate the quality of specialty care available in West Virginia to best serve our patients, their loved ones, and our referring providers from across the region. We look forward to adding their knowledge and perspectives to the Cancer Institute’s multidisciplinary care teams that they are joining this summer and fall.”
Brian Goodman, M.D., joined WVU Medicine in April from Wheeling Hospital, where he served as a thoracic surgeon. Dr. Goodman earned his medical degree at the University of Vermont College of Medicine before completing a general surgery residency at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. He completed a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at the Ohio State University Medical Center and a minimally invasive thoracic surgery fellowship and a thoracic oncology fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
Brian Boone, M.D., will join WVU Medicine in August from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, where he is completing a complex surgical oncology fellowship. Dr. Boone earned his medical degree from the University of South Florida College of Medicine before completing a general surgery residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
Emily Groves, M.D., will join WVU Medicine in August from the University of Texas, where she is completing a fellowship in colorectal surgery. Dr. Groves earned her medical degree from Marshall University before completing a general surgery residency at Oregon Health and Science University.
Paul Renz, D.O., will join WVU Medicine in August from Allegheny General Hospital, where he is completing a residency in radiation oncology. Dr. Renz earned his doctor of osteopathy degree at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. He is board certified by the American Board of Radiology Certification.
Krista Pfaendler, M.D., M.P.H., will join WVU Medicine in September from the University of California, Irvine, where she completed a gynecologic oncology fellowship. Dr. Pfaendler earned her medical degree at the University of Pittsburgh before completing a Master of Public Health at the University of California, Irvine.
Michael Cowher, M.D., will join WVU Medicine in October from the Allegheny Cancer Center at Allegheny General Hospital. Dr. Cowher earned his medical degree from the Northeastern Ohio University College of Medicine before completing general surgery and surgical oncology research residencies at Allegheny General Hospital. He also completed a breast surgery fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Breast Center.
